Abstract

The article presents a case study which looks at the renewal of botany in the sixteenth century and examines how the methods of medical botany influenced the methods of definition recommended in treatises on the discourse arts. Topics discussed include qualities of the early modern discourse arts, review of plant descriptions from contemporary herbals to match the dialectical standards of discovered species and rhetorical and dialectical principles to textual analysis.
