Abstract

In July 2007, NIOSH sponsored Prevention through Design (PtD) Workshop, which con- cluded that there was a critical need to include PtD in the education of engineers. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the concept of Prevention through Design to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities to freshman engineers in the intro- duction to design course. Engineering students should emerge from this transdisciplinary education with a broad perspective of occupational safety and health needs in the design process to prevent or minimize the work-related hazards. Similarities between transdisci- plinary process and Prevention through Design concept also introduced and discussed.
