The March of family with god for freedom: Right-wing groups, political participation and coup d'etat in Brazil, 1964

Abstract

This article intends to deepen studies on the role of right-wing political groups and leadership under the Brazilian military dictatorship established in 1964. For this purpose, I will choose as object the Marchs of Family with God for Freedom, manifestations that, started in São Paulo on the 19th of March 1964, spread across several cities in the country, before and after the March 31 coup, first claiming military intervention, then celebrating it. Specifically, the proposal is to study the speeches mobilized by organized right-wing groups, from the study of two Marches in particular: that of São Paulo and that of Rio de Janeiro, the two largest manifestations of this type that took place in March and April 1964. At the same time, I intend to take the Marchs of Family with God for Freedom as an object to better understand the specifics of the social pact built in the immediate post-coup.
