Abstract
Two and three-dimensional frame instability problems are treated in this chapter. Methods of analysis for instability and methods of design that protect against this type of failure are provided. Major topics discussed are stability of individual columns and stability of frames. Both elastic and inelastic solutions for special types of frames are included. The chapter also deals with the problems of instability under dynamic and repeated load. Other topics covered include stability of mixed steel-concrete construction, the difference between braced and unbraced frames, joint deformation. local instabilities, factor of safety, and optimization.
