Antiviral effect of noformicin.

Abstract

Noformicin (b - (5 - imino - 2 - pyrrolidinecarboxamido)propamidine) clearly inhibited the multiplication of polio, ECHO-28, adeno, and vaccinia viruses, but not lipo virus; the drug also inhibited influenza virus in both mice and chorioallantoic membranes and the development of consolidation in lungs of mice infected with influenza virus. The chemotherapeutic index of nonformicin was 33, considerably more favorable than that of guanidione nitrate (8) or 2-morpholinyl-4-amino-s-triazine-6-carboxyguanidide (20). Development of resistance to noformicin was not observed, and variants resistant to guanidine and its derivs. were sensitive to noformicin. [on SciFinder (R)]
