Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the ethical issues concerned in keeping animals in zoos by assessing the living conditions of wild felines in captivity. For this purpose, a theoretical and exploratory research of scientific texts and an analysis of the information made available by national and international zoos, visits and interviews to a number of institutions was conducted. Arguments from different sectors of society advocating for the preservation or eradication of zoos were confronted, promoting better animal welfare, this being an ethical principle expected from institutions willing to keep wild animals in captivity, through strategies such as environmental enrichment and investment in research, technology and monitoring.
