Abstract

Aberrant sprouting of granule cell axons is a common feature in temporal lobe epilepsy. An increasingly detailed picture of granule cell circuit changes has emerged, but the cause-effect relationship between mossy fiber sprouting and epileptogenesis remains unclear. Recent progress in suppressing mossy fiber sprouting might help address its functional consequences. For an expanded treatment of this topic see Jasper's Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies, Fourth Edition (Noebels JL, Avoli M, Rogawski MA, Olsen RW, Delgado-Escueta AV, eds) published by Oxford University Press (available on the National Library of Medicine Bookshelf [NCBI] at). © 2010 International League Against Epilepsy.
