Abstract

Service-learning is a well-researched pedagogy that advances learning and helps meet the public mission of higher education. While rooted in higher education, it can be effectively adapted to different sectors. However, little is known about the direct developmental benefits of service-learning participation for leader education. There appear clear points of alignment between the trends in both service-learning and leader development (e.g., a social justice orientation, employment of critical social theory, and a purpose of addressing root causes when engaging with complex challenges). Still, more work needs to be done to establish the leader development benefits of this "high-impact" educational practice.
