Abstract

The crystal structure of VO2 has been studied by X-ray methods. It has been found to belong to the space group P21/C. The unit cell dimensions and the parameters of the metal and oxygen atoms are given. The structure is shown to be a deformed rutile type with the metal atoms within strings of VO6 octahedra occuring in doublets as in the MoO2 structure type. The interatomic distances and angles in the VO6 octahedra are compared with those in the TiO6 octahedra (rutile).
