Abstract

Sintered MgO was immersed into molten slags at temperatures from 1350 to 1425 degree C and the dissolution rate was determined with the rotating cylinder method. The dissolution rate increased with rotating speed and temperature, and was controlled by mass transport. The change of mass transfer coefficient at 1400 degree C with slag composition correlated to the change of kinematic viscosity of slag. Dissolution proceeded through the formation of (Fe,Mg)O at the interface. Penetration was retarded by this dense layer.
