Abstract

Early school leaving (ESL) is one of the most worrying problems facing the Spanish and Catalan education system. It is a complex and multi-causal phenomenon that poses a challenge that needs to be addressed by educational policy but also, and as a matter of urgency, by schools in compulsory secondary education. The use of segregated educational strategies to attend diversity that are far removed from those favouring inclusion, equity and equal opportunities, have an impact on the personal and academic trajectory of students which, among others, could be an explanatory factor for the country's AEP rates. In order to counteract these strategies, in this article we present the sociological, psychological and pedagogical bases of a 3-year pilot project of professional mentoring aimed at the prevention of ESL through the accompaniment of secondary school students, teachers and their families.
