Abstract

This paper analyzes the historical relationship between human rights and the development of social work, addressing the implications of the rights approach in the profession and the professional role in the defense and promotion of human rights. For this purpose, we use as methods the literature review and discussion in the areas of human rights theory, the history of social work and recent research to show the application of this approach in contemporary social intervention at an international level. This analysis gives rise to a series of reasons for incorporating a critical rights approach in the social intervention as well as to reaffirm the alliance between social work and human rights around a common goal: the promotion of social well-being.
