Abstract
A prospective study was carried out to evaluate correlation between endoscopic signs and histological diagnoses of gastritis and intestinal metaplasia in 216 patients remitted for upper G.I. endoscopy. The endoscopic signs were coded and registered, and the resulting data were correlated with the histologic diagnoses of the gastric biopsies. Associations with a correlation greater than expected by chance were selected. This happened with the following: atrophic gastritis and increased visibility of submucosal vessels at the antrum. Kappa 0.208 (0.041-0.376); atrophic gastritis and increased visibility of submucosal vessels at the gastric body. Kappa 0.195 (0.002-0.388); atrophic gastritis and cobblestone-like surface at the antrum. Kappa 0.213 (0.044-0.381). Acute inflammation and thickened folds at the antrum. Kappa 0.094 (0.018-0.16). There was a poor correlation between most endoscopic signs and histological diagnoses. The definitive diagnosis of gastritis and intestinal metaplasia must be based on the histologic findings. © 1998 Corporación Editora Médica del Valle.
