Abstract

Laminaran was isolated from Eisenia bicyclis. On the basis of the methylation, periodate oxidation, NMR spectroscopy by 1Hand 13 Cnuclei, this glucan was shown to have a branched structure composed of (l→3)— and (l→6)-Iinked β-D-glucopyranose residues in the ratio 3: 2. The glucan was especially characterized by comparison of its 13C and 1H NMR spectra with those of related compounds. The NMR investigation of the polyol polysaccharide, ob-tained by reduction after periodate oxidation of laminaran, was very useful for elucidation of the composition, structure and major sequence of the native glucan. © 1979, Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry.
