Abstract

Kompas as a national news media has been transformed for 57 years in its journey as the "Mandate of the People's Conscience". During that time, Kompas has grown from print media and has entered the internet-based digital world following the dynamics of society. As a form of existence and effort on this historical journey, Kompas collaborated with digital artists to make the cover of the e-paper edition 27/6/2022 in NFT (non-fungible token) format. This digital-based cover becomes interesting to analyze because it is a special collaboration to face the virtual digital world that is growing massively. This study attempts to describe a visual study based on the science of visual communication design. This visual meaning reading will use descriptive qualitative visual semiotic analysis with sign-meaning reading using Triadic Sumbo. The study was assisted by using the theory of signs by Charles S. Peirce and codes from Rolland Barthes. The results obtained from this study will provide an overview of visual reality based on technological developments and visual culture. How are the codes contained in the visual sign on the cover of the Kompas e-paper able to reveal connotative meanings other than the denotative meaning of the Kompas editor itself. So that reading will enrich the study of visual communication design as a producer of visual signs in the dynamics of society in facing the onslaught of digital products.
