Abstract

This paper approaches the issue of adequacy as a component of sociolinguistic, sociocultural and intercultural competence in the learning of Spanish as a foreign language. To accomplish this aim, we carry out a quantitative statistical type of research with the software SPSS 17 (Statistical Product and Service Solutions), in which we apply a descriptive and inferential analysis. The instrument used is a questionnaire and the participants are 59 Bulgarian students who study Spanish as a foreign language in a non-immersion context. The levels of the participants are B1, C1 and C2. It is our purpose to analyse some aspects concerning the sociolinguistic and sociocultural adequacy of students, amongst them the relation between adequacy and level of Spanish of the participants. Likewise, we pay attention to the degree in which the students tend to transfer to the target language and culture patterns pertaining to their own culture. We seek to raise awareness about the importance of intercultural adequacy, because we believe that culture of a foreign language must be taught progressively in all levels. Objectives and contents need to be planned carefully, and the degree of complexity must increase according to the linguistic competence of students, without letting aside other competences. © 2012 PUCV, Chile.
