Abstract
Alternative processes to energy generation can have environmental and economic advantages. One these process is the use of microbial fuel cells (MFC), characterized by reactors that are able to promote the conversion of chemical energy present in the organic matter into electrical power by micro- organisms. Based on this process, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of an anionic surfactant in MFC with and without membrane, inoculated with septic tank sludge. The electrodes used were graphite rods and were fed synthetic substrate and maintained at room temperature. The MFC were monitored for current and voltage generated during 35 days. It was observed that the presence of the membrane and addition of LAS favored the generation of energy. The addition of LAS positively influenced the ge- neration of electricity, the CCM without membrane most current density was 7.5 mA/m2 and the CCM membrane was 37.3 mA/m2. Keywords:
