Abstract
Introduction and Aims: Paraphenylenediamine (ppd) is a hair dye used as cosmetic in Africa, Middle East, and countries of Indian subcontinent. Ingestion of the dye produces rhabdomyolysis, hemolysis and acute renal failure. So, we aimed to study the impact of PPD on kidney function, renal outcome and mortality rate in Upper Egypt. Methods: 50 cases admitted to intensive medical care of Luxor International Hospital with PPD toxicity by ingestion were studied for history and clinical picture of ppd poisoning. Laboratory investigations included kidney function tests (blood urea and serum creatinine), liver enzymes (AST and ALT), cardiac enzymes (CK, CK-MB and LDH), complete blood count, random blood sugar, arterial blood gases, microscopic examination of urine, serum K+, serum uric acid and kidney ultrasonography. Results: Patients showed high level of CK indicating rhabdomyolysis and high liver enzymes (AST&ALT) indicating liver cell damage. Elevated levels of creatinine and urea, acidosis, chocolate brown discoloration of urine and diminished urine volume reflected renal affection in cases of PPD ingestion.
