Summary: A case of phaeochromocytoma is reported in which perioperative hypertension was controlled with an infusion of esmolol. Transoesophageal echocardiography was used in addition to conventional monitoring to manage i. v. fluid administration and assess perioperative changes in left ventricular function. © 1993 British Journal of Anaesthesia.
