Amélio Robles, andar de soldado velho: fotografia e masculinidade na Revolução Mexicana

Abstract

O artigo apresenta a história da masculinização radical e permanente de uma jovem de origem rural a partir de sua incorporação na Revolução Mexicana. A análise, de um lado, aborda o processo de transgeneração de Robles, cuja identidade social e subjetiva, e aspecto físico, se masculinizam mediante o hábil manejo dos recursos culturais disponíveis em uma longínqua região rural mexicana no início do século XX: a performance de gênero - postura, gesto e vestuário -, a fotografia de estúdio e a imprensa sensacionalista. De outro, foram estudadas distintas percepções sobre Amélio Robles, confrontando retóricas de gênero vigentes no México pós-revolucionário, permeadas por discursos homofóbicos e transfóbicos.This article discusses the radical and permanent masculinization of a young peasant woman during the Mexican Revolution. The argument unfolds on two levels of analysis. On one hand, it refers to Roble’s transgendering process. His social and subjective identity as well as his bodily appearance are masculinized through a very effective use of the cultural resources available in an isolated region of rural Mexico in the early twentieth century: gender performance - pose, gestures and attire -studio portraiture, and sensationalist journalism. On the other hand, the article locates Robles transgendering process within the contested rhetorics of gender of postrevolutionary Mexico, a strongly nationalist discourse, with homophobic and transphobic tones
