Abstract

This chapter sets out the main objectives of the book. It describes the philosophy of linguistics generally, specifically characterises core tenets of generative linguistics and how other frameworks depart from it, and discusses the various concepts of structuralism within philosophy and beyond. It ends with a chapter guide to the rest of the book.
