Abstract
This paper identifies several major misconceptions concerning the nature of artistic activity and describes their negative impact on schools. In addition, it describes the important positive contributions the arts can make to the development of cognition and argues the importance of including the arts as a major resource for the educational development of the young. In developing this argument, a contrast is made between those Greek ideas that have provided an intellectual legacy for our conception of mind and emerging ideas in the arts and in cognitive psychology that provide a very different conception of thinking and human intelligence.
