Most of the books published since 1850 and preserved in libraries are threatened by disintegration. These books are becoming brittle, yellow and in some cases, disintegrating. This situation is getting worse because of the number of new books published worldwide on acid paper each year. To resolve these and other related problems, international standards for permanent paper have been established. The use of permanent or acid-free papers for virtually any application is being seriously considered.
