Abstract

When the environmental operation of a pulp mill is assessed much of the attention is usually paid to the bleach plant. This is appropriate. The development of bleaching technology has been very rapid over the past 25 years and more is to come. In order to keep up with the frontrunners of environmentally friendly bleaching continuous investments in the mill are required. The aim of this article is to give an overview of recent trends and to point out ways to improve the environmental operation of an old bleach plant having a limited budget.
