Abstract

Bangkal (Nauclea subdita) barks has been used as traditional cosmetics in South Kalimantan. Bangkal barks contained compounds having high sunscreens and antioxidant activities, such as the flavonoids and tannins. The aim of this study was to identify the potency of sunscreen and antioxidant activities of ethanolic extract from the barks of bangkal. Determination of sun protecting factor (SPF) value of the ethanolic extract from bangkal barks has been examined using UV- Vis spectrophotometer at wavelength range 290-320 nm. The results showed that ethanolic extract of bangkal barks with concentration of 250 ppm revealed the SPF value is 10, 500 ppm revealed the SPF value is 15 and 1000 ppm revealed the SPF value is 29. Antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of bangkal bark
