Abstract

A wild and presumably female African elephant (Loxodonta africana) was observed when she threw with her trunk various materials - mud, soil, vegetation - to an interfering white rhino (Ceratotherium simum). Object throwing, a special type of animal tool-behaviour, seems to be used by elephants not only in aggression but also for exploration.
