Abstract

Measurements are made in a heated axisymmetric turbulent jet for different values of the isothermal external stream velocity. Normalized mean velocity and temperature profiles in the jet are unaffected by the jet-toexternal- stream velocity ratio and are essentially in agreement with the distributions obtained in the heated round jet into still air and with results for the heated axisymmetric wake. The turbulent temperature fluctuation intensity and the longitudinal heat flux, measured on the axis of symmetry, show a significant increase as the velocity ratio decreases. The radial turbulent heat flux and Reynolds shear stress distributions have been calculated from the mean velocity and temperature profiles and also show a marked increase with a decrease in the velocity ratio. The advection of mean squared temperature fluctuations becomes more significant vis a vis the production term when the velocity ratio decreases. Overall, the flow exhibits a behavior which lies between that for a heated jet into still air and a heated axisymmetric wake. © 1976 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
