Capitalism, Procreation, and Gender: Towards a Gender Liberated Politics of Procreation

Abstract

This article examines the effects of capitalist production on social systems of procreation, drawing from Marxist political and economic theory. It argues that capitalism introduces an increasing degree of alienation into procreation and that capitalism builds the basis for a certain degree of degendering systems of procreation. These trends are considered with regard to Marxist feminism, radical feminism, queer, and trans liberation. Procreative extension, the expansion of all types of procreative labors and relationships beyond gender categories, is offered as a critical political ideal.
