Abstract

It is natural that many workers have focused their attention on the movement of the nitrogeneous compounds localized in chloroplasts when examining the relationship between photosynthetic activity of green leaves or the mechanism of ageing and leaf nitrogen, because the process of photosynthesis is exclusively associated with chloroplasts and the majority of the total leaf nitrogen is concentrated in the chloroplasts. There have been several attempts to isolate chloroplasts and estimate the amount of nitrogen derived from this organella (1–3). According to these reports, nitrogen of the chloroplasts isolated in aqueous media corresponds to about 30 to 40 percent of the total leaf nitrogen. © 1972 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
