Abstract

A tall, muscular man with tousled dark brown hair, Abdelkrim met me one afternoon in March of 2009 at a Starbucks in the quartier (neighborhood) of Montparnasse and told me he identifies with Bruce Lee, the Hong Kong–American martial artist and action-film star. “He was too American for the Chinese and too Chinese for Americans,” he explained between sips of his espresso.⁴⁵ Despite his successes, Bruce Lee was caught between American and Chinese cultures, and never considered as belonging to either.
