Abstract

The kinetics of the hexacyanoferrate (III)-sulphite reaction have been examined in order to elucidate the detailed mechanism of the reaction. A radical mechanism best satisfies the kinetic data: Fe(CN)63-+SO32-→Fe(CN)64-+SO3- slowSO32-+Fe(CN)63-→SO3(SO42-)+Fe(CN)64-2SO3-→S3O62-. The effect of the "inert" electrolyte on the rate of the reaction is discussed. The ratio of bimolecular rate constants in H2O and D2O is 1·4 ± 0·1. The enthalpies of activation when K+ and Na+ are the "inert" cationic species are 12·6 ± 1·0 and 11·7 ± 1·0 kcal/mole respectively. © 1967.
