Abstract

This article analyzes recent transformations in the Brazilian social protection system focusing on the social assistance policy, in particular on the institutional consolidation of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS). Ancient as a practice, in the register of charity, philanthropy and private provision, social assistance has recently been affirmed as a right and as a public policy.
