LGBT parents and the workplace

Abstract

This chapter describes two previously disconnected streams of research on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) workers and on the experiences of working parents. We argue that understanding of LGBT parents lies at the intersection of these areas of scholarship. Thus, we discuss factors that bolster (and break down) the work-life interface as well as dynamics that enhance (and detract from) the experiences of gay and lesbian workers. Relevant theoretical perspectives are discussed, including role theory, stigma theory, minority stress, and intersectionality. We also discuss the findings of the limited research that has examined the experiences of LGBT parents and the workplace. In doing so, we highlight important theoretical and practical issues to be explored in future research.
