Abstract

This volumes might be one of the first in a series of publication on gender and conflict zones. it unites 12 chapter, of which 5 are of more conceptual interest. These chapters deal with theoretical positions towards gender and conflict in the contemporary world; with feminist analysis of security regimes; sexual violence and the militarised state; gendered understandings of conflict; and a concluding chapter which draws the individual chapters together in an analysis of globalisation, states, and women's agency -empowerment-. The case studies deal with refugee sites, gender and ethnicity in the military; Chinese women's federation; violence against women in Brazil; women and Hindu nationalism; Northern Ireland; and women's exploitation under apartheid South Africa.
