Investigation of durability of geotextiles tubes in marine conditions

Abstract

Geotextile tubes are widely used in coastal protection structures like revetments, breakwaters, and containment bunds. Geotextile sheets that make up the tube are exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as UV radiation and wave action. Thus, it is crucial to assess the long-term durability of geotextile materials used to form geotextile tubes, especially since these structures are designed to last 50 years or more. A study was conducted on samples from a 6-year-old geotextile tube that was part of a containment bund on Singapore's northeast coast. Samples were taken from multiple sections along the bund. At each section, samples were retrieved from three orientations: top facing, diagonal facing and side-corner facing of the tube. Physical and mechanical properties of these samples were tested and evaluated. Results showed an increase in mass per unit area, a decrease in thickness, and a retained tensile strength of 18-80% compared to virgin samples of the same grade. A study comparing this durability result with the durability results of a stronger grade of geotextile was conducted. In addition, extensive vegetation growth was observed on the geotextile tube bund. A survey of the plant species was conducted, and the results and observations of the survey were discussed.
