Abstract
Nowadays there is hastening development of conducting polymer nanocomposites based sensors for detecting CO, NH 3 , and H 2 S pollutant gases. This critical review aims to discuss recent progress and challenges in the development of conductive polymer nanocomposites specifically polyaniline and polypyrrole‐based nanocomposites for gas sensor applications and to overview the different novel methodologies that have been applied for the synthesis of conducting polymer nanocomposites for various gas sensor applications. It is found that, there are four typical synthesis methodologies adapted for conducting polymer nanocomposites development namely in‐situ polymerization, sol–gel process, mixing methodology, and electrochemical method, further all these methods are discussed in detail. Additionally, recent researches on conducting polymer nanocomposite based sensors to detect CO, NH 3 , and H 2 S pollutant gases are highlighted. Present review also emphasized on the preferred methodology for synthesizing polymer nanocomposites that can further used for various gas sensor applications. The various parameters of the conductive polymer nanocomposite based sensor like sensitivity, selectivity, the limit of detection, response time, and recovery time are summarized for CO, NH 3 , and H 2 S gases. Present work also highlighted the future of high potential conductive polymer nanocomposites based sensor by overcoming challenges that limit their maximum potential in sensors technology.
