Abstract

South of the equator, where the Nazca oceanic plate subducts below South America, the Andes are now growing in a simple plate-margin setting, without complexities due to Cainozoic collision of exotic terrains. The contemporary deformation of the Andes and the present geometry and rates of motion of the plates can thus be measured and constrained. There are now sufficient data for a detailed examination of the sequence of mountain building in the central Andes during the past 10-15 m.y. Crustal shortening has occurred in the past 10 m.y. but the relationships between volcanic activity and deformation are variable.-R.A.H.
