Motivos para el consumo de alcohol en estudiantes de secundaria de Minatitlán, Veracruz, México

Abstract

Introducción: El consumo abusivo y la dependencia del alcohol constituyen un serio problema de salud que afecta a millones de personas, y que genera un gasto enorme en los sistemas de salud, que se ven obligados a atender lesiones y enfermedades asociadas a esta condición prevenible. Cuando el consumo de alcohol inicia a edades tempranas, la gravedad del problema se incrementa seriamente, y es necesario atenderlo; sin embargo, también resulta indispensable entender los motivos del consumo, a fin de proponer estrategias de prevención que resulten efectivas. Objetivo: Identificar los motivos para el consumo de alcohol entre estudiantes de una secundaria pública de Minatitlán, Veracruz. Método: Estudio descriptivo y transversal. Se utilizó un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio simple por cuotas, proporcional al tamaño de la población. La muestra estuvo constituida por 127 estudiantes. Se empleó una Cédula de Datos Personales, el Test AUDIT, y el Cuestionario de Motivos para el Consumo de Alcohol. Resultados: La media de edad de inicio en el consumo de alcohol es de 11.7 años; 31.5% de los participantes que consumieron alcohol durante el último año pertenece al sexo masculino, y la cerveza es la bebida de preferencia con 37%. También se observó que 16.5% de los participantes se encuentra en un una fase de consumo riesgoso; por último, se registró que los principales motivos para el consumo de alcohol se relacionan directamente con los factores sociales y de reforzamiento. Conclusiones: Los adolescentes empiezan a consumir alcohol debido a la convivencia que se genera en las reuniones sociales, y por encontrar esta actividad divertida y emocionante. Existe, además, permisividad por parte de los padres de familia como un posible factor que influye en los motivos del consumo a temprana edad, así como en el aumento del uso entre el género femenino.   MOTIVES FOR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF MINATITLÁN VERACRUZ, MÉXICO Abstract Introduction: Abuse and alcohol dependence constitute a serious health problem that affects millions of people and generates a huge expense in health systems that are forced to deal with injuries and diseases associated with this preventable disease. When alcohol consumption starts early, the severity of the problem increases very seriously and it is necessary to attend to it, but also to understand the reasons for consumption in order to propose effective prevention strategies. Objective: Identify motives for alcohol consumption in high school students of Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. Methods: Descriptive and transversal study. It was used a simple random sample by quotes, proportional to the population. The sample was of 127 students. Besides, it was employed a certificate of personal data, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Drinking Motive Questionnaire (DMQ). Results: The mean age of onset in alcohol consumption was 11.7 years, where 31.5% of the participants who consumed alcohol during the last year were male, with beer being the most preferred with 37%. It was also found that 16.5% of the participants were in a consumption with risk and finally, it was identified that the main reasons for the consumption of alcohol are due to the social and reinforcing factors. Conclusions: Teenagers begin to consume alcohol for the coexistence that is generated in social gatherings, for being fun and exciting. There is also parental permissibility as a possible factor influencing motives and consumption at an early age, as well as increasing consumption in the female gender.
