Abstract

This paper presents an Sizing Rule-Based Home Energy Management System (SRB-HEMS) designed to efficiently manage power flow, incorporating deterministic sizing rules as part of the RB-HEMS within a smart home. The proposed system aims to reduce peak demand, the amount of electricity drawn from the grid, and thus the nanogrid's dependence on main grid support, as well as the building owner's operational costs, while considering home-scale in the photovoltaic system sizing process and EV properties. The system consists of multiple units: a Distributed Generator (DG), which is the photovoltaic (PV) system that can either feed the home and/or sell energy to the grid, an auxiliary battery, and the operator EV that can discharge in the nanogrid to feed the load, using Vehicle to Home (V2H) technology. Furthermore, the system collects data from the local nanogrid and calculates load demand every 5 minutes to gauge power production and consumption in the home. The cases studied have been carefully chosen to evaluate the system under real-world conditions. The obtained result is a price reduction of more than 72%, with the consideration of unit operational costs, compared to the daily cost without using HEMS, and a peak demand reduction of 78%, with a reduction of the purchased energy from the grid of more than 96%.
