How Tamansari Become a Sustainable Cultural and Historical Space of Kesultanan Yogyakarta: The Journey of Tamansari in Adapting to the Identity Shift

Abstract

Tamansari is the second and the most preserved Pesanggrahan (resting area) of the Kesultanan Yogyakarta. The area had continuously transformed throughout 1765-2023, shifting from a private into a public historical site. This identity shift reflects transformations in its cultural landscape. This research explores how Tamansari managed to sustain its cultural landscape in 2023. There area three points of inquiry: 1. Tamansari's cultural landscape identity, 2. Tamansari's evolution, 3. How Tamansari adapts. This research uses cultural landscape evolution theory to explore the concepts of cultural landscape, identity, and evolution with the observed timeline from 1765-2023. This research finds that the cultural landscape identity of Tamansari Complex has shifted from its previous ones. A transformed cultural landscape causes the shift In its shifted identities, the relationship dynamic in the complex evolved into a more intricate form. The current Tamansari Complex's identity is both threatened and sustained by the transformations.
