Abstract

This text analyses the impact of the First World War on the discourse and political projects held by the Spanish Traditionalist sectors. It examines in detail the Germanophile leanings of Juan Vázquez de Mella and they are contrasted with the efforts in favour of peace carried out by the Vatican authorities. In addition to that, a brief account of the tensions generated in the Catholic public sphere by the European armed conflict. Finally, through the close reading of press articles, public talks and interviews, the article also inquiries into the views on the Great War and the main contributions by the ideologue Vázquez de Mella to the Spanish traditionalist and authoritarian thought.
