Abstract
A new proof of the security of quantum key distribution protocols is introduced. In this new proof, the security of the BB4 protocol is related to entanglement purification protocols and quantum error correcting codes. The new proof elucidates why the rates obtainable from previous proofs are related to rates for Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes.
