Abstract

An effective criminal justice system is essential for enhancing social well-being, environmental sustainability, and economic development. The United Nations (UN) Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 is based on three pillars of development: social, economic, and environmental. In this regard, the UN Agenda recognizes the importance of a fair and impartial criminal justice system to ensure environmental development, reduce inequality, and minimize the negative impact of all other critical elements of socioeconomic life that stand in the way of the said agenda’s implementation. This study thus seeks to explain the importance of an effective criminal justice system aimed at creating an inclusive society and preserving legal integrity and the rule of law as prerequisites for sustainable development. To substantiate this claim, the study analyzes the nature of crimes and the contemporary recognition of their significance, while establishing a connection with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, it explores the relationship between specific types of crimes, such as corruption and environmental offenses, and their impacts on sustainable development and environmental sustainability. To this end, this study conducted a literature review that incorporates views from multiple disciplines— including legal studies, environmental science, and social policy—to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Furthermore, a significant analysis of international treaties and case law elucidates the impact of criminal justice on sustainable development. This underscores the crucial necessity of a comprehensive strategy that merges law enforcement endeavors with sustainable development endeavors to foster a just and inclusive society. Finally, it encompasses the effects of particular offenses, such as corruption and environmental infractions, on sustainability initiatives and promotes collaborative approaches to addressing these challenges.
