Abstract

The seven species of Selaginella native to Fiji are described and keyed. For herbarium material, the morphology of the lateral leaves, including the distribution of cell types in the ventral epidermis, provides the best taxonomic characters. Ornamentation of the megaspores, and the colour of the microspores, are also useful. The existence of hybrids between S. firmula and S. laxa is proposed. The possibility that S. rechingeri and S. victoriae differ only at varietal level is noted. © 1997 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
