Abstract

The pre-travel vaccination status, health of the traveller, his or her expected behaviour while travelling, risk of disease in the country to which he or she is travelling, as well as the country requirements, need to be taken into consideration when determining the need to vaccinate prior to travel. Travellers should ensure that all routine vaccinations are up to date prior to departure. Yellow fever vaccination, when travelling to or from yellow fever endemic areas, is the only compulsory travel vaccine. However, there are countryspecific recommendations for mandatory vaccination, i.e. the meningococcal vaccination for pilgrims attending the Hajj.
