Abstract

The structural properties that include X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the polymer polyvinyl alcohol, silica Nano-particles and the mixture polymer with silica nanoparticles that has particle size (18.5) nm have studied. The absorption spectra of the pure polyvinyl alcohol polymer and mixture of polymer with silica nano-particles film have measured. Then, study bacterial growth for these samples. The antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus as gram positive bacteria, Klebsiella spp.. and Escherichia coli represented gram negative bacteria has tested. The results showed that the reduction of bacterial growth percentage for polymer polyvinyl alcohol reached to (20.47, 3.38, 35.26 and 71.28) % against (S. epidermidis, Klebsiella spp., S. aureus and E. coli), respectively. Whereas the percentage for silica nano-particles reached to (32.38, 32.03, 34.91 and 74.33) % respectively against (S. epidermidis, Klebsiella spp., S. aureus and E. coli). While the reduction of bacterial growth for a mixture of polymer polyvinyl alcohol with silica nano-particles is (70.47, 32.00, 61.40 and 81.28) % (S. epidermidis, Klebsiella spp. spp., S. aureus and E. coli), respectively.
