Abstract

Insufficient physical activity in adolescents affects importantly their physic, mental and social wellness. Over 80% of the adolescents in the world do not have enough physical activity, and body image self-perception may significantly influence their physical activity level. This study aimed to analyze the physical activity level and body image self-perception, by population and sex, according to stage of change in Mexican adolescents. A descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study was conducted in a sample of 329 adolescents (14.46 } 0.49 years), coursing the third grade of middle schools located in a rural and urban population in Mexico. Adolescents' physical activity level was measured by physical activity questionnaire for adolescents (PAQ-A). Stage of change and body image self-perception were also measured. When physical activity was made at healthy levels, boys performed higher levels than girls, but when physical activity was insufficient, there were no difference between sexes. After application it can be concluded that there was a positive association between stages of change and physical activity level. Furthermore, among adolescents in action and maintenance stages, boys had higher physical activity levels than girls.
