Abstract
Among the specialists contributing to this new textbook, 24 are from UK, 5 from USA, 2 from Australia and one from the Netherlands. A section on problem-orientated medicine, in which 33 chapters deal with symptoms observed (e.g. vomiting, cough, jaundice, pruritus, ataxia), is followed by 'systems medicine', in which 16 chapters deal with individual body systems. For generalized infectious diseases, see "Specific infections of the dog" by I. A. P. McCandish (pp. 921-958; 124 ref.) and "Infectious diseases of the cat" by R. M. Gaskell & M. Bennett (959-984; 87 ref.). There are also chapters on cancer therapy and behavioural problems. There is no special chapter on parasitic diseases, but parasites are mentioned in the part of the body affected. The practising veterinarian will be helped by the provision, in section 1, of "history checklists" and procedures for physical examination. Those requiring further information are guided towards extensive lists of references
