Influence of B2O3 on sintering behavior and the dielectric properties of Li2MgSiO4 ceramics

Abstract

The influence of B2O3 additives on the sintering behavior, microstructure, and dielectric properties of Li2MgSiO 4 (LMS) ceramics was investigated. The experimental results showed that doping of LMS ceramics with 2wt% B2O3 caused a decrease in the sintering temperature from 1250 to 810°C. The ceramics produced were dense with a well-crystallized microstructure where predominantly fine grains of Li2MgSiO4 were formed. The dielectric properties appeared to be dependent on microstructure. The measured dielectric values of 2% B2O3-doped LMS ceramics (r = 6.61 and tan δ = 1.6 × 10-4 at 1MHz and r = 5.84 and tan δ = 7.43 × 10-5 at 8 GHz) indicate their potential for use in applications which require the involvement of low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC). © 2012 The Ceramic Society of Japan.
