Abstract
The aim of this study was to discuss the state of the art about treatment technologies and EC removal efficiencies in effluent treatment plants (ETP) and water treatment plants (WTP). Scientific studies published between 2010 and 2019 were researched. In total, 14 studies were analyzed regarding the removal efficiencies of these compounds, 5 of them in ETP and 9 in WTP. Regarding ETP, membrane separation processes and UASB reactors have been studied for their ability to remove several EC, presenting promising results. For WTP, adsorption in activated carbon was one of the most studied technologies for the removal of several EC and is very promising, since, through it, there is no formation of degradation by-products and their efficiency is higher or equal to other treatment techniques. EC removal efficiencies in both ETP and WTP range from 0 to 100%, depending on EC and treatment technology, which demonstrates the need to deepen treatment technologies.
